Student Health Insurance

I will find information here on the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP), and University requirements for health insurance.

The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (ACA) includes requirements for student health insurance plans; U-SHIP is compliant with ACA requirements.

All registered students must carry good health insurance. (See the Comparable Coverage Checklist to review the benefits that all plans must provide to meet University requirements.) Additionally, if I reside in Chicago during the academic year, my insurance must cover medical care provided in the Chicago area for both emergency and non-emergency medical situations.

  1. Therefore, each year all insurance eligible students are enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP).
  2. To waive out of U-SHIP coverage, I must provide proof of alternate comparable coverage before the enrollment/waiver deadline.
  3. If I do not waive by the deadline, I will remain enrolled in U-SHIP for the entire academic year, and I will be responsible for the annual premium.
  4. If I will use U-SHIP as your insurance coverage for the 2015-2016 academic year, I should confirm my enrollment as soon as possible! My data is not active in United Healthcare's system until 48 hours after my enrollment is confirmed.

Detailed information about the 2015-2016 U-SHIP plan can be found here.
