Student Accident and Sickness Insurance (SASI)
Changes to Coverage
You must make a SASI coverage selection or apply for a waiver during the enrollment period or you will be automatically enrolled in the SASI Basic plan and you will be billed for that coverage. You will not be able to waive the SASI Basic plan enrollment or upgrade to the Advantage plan once the enrollment period has ended until the next plan year, with the following exception:
Midyear Petitions
In a few special cases it may be necessary to change your health insurance coverage during the middle of the plan year. Petitions will be granted only for reasons including:
- Life-changing event (such as marriage, birth/adoption of a child, divorce)
- Loss of health insurance coverage (for reasons such as becoming too old for dependent coverage under a parental plan, or a parent/spouse/same-sex domestic partner starting or terminating a job)
- Recent immigration of a dependent spouse, same-sex domestic partner, or children
Approved midyear petitions to add coverage become effective on the day your previous insurance terminates, or the day after the post-mark date of the petition, whichever is later. You will be responsible for the full premium for the quarter in which your coverage is effective. The premium is not pro-rated. Midyear petitions to add a spouse, same-sex domestic partner or child may also lead to payment for their coverage over the Summer quarter. For more information, refer to the section on Premiums.
How to fileĀ a Midyear Petition
To add SASI coverage after the enrollment deadline, you will need to print the petition request (PDF), complete the form, and either fax, mail or hand deliver the petition and proof of the midyear event to the on-campus Chickering Office. If your midyear petition is a request to waive SASI (PDF) for the remainder of the plan year, then you will also need to submit proof of comparable insurance along with your request.
