About Us
Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) addresses the health and wellness needs of the University of Chicago community through the three SHCS units: Student Health Service, Student Counseling Service, and Health Promotion and Wellness.
Student Life Fee
All registered students are assessed a quarterly Student Life Fee which allows them access to the Student Health Service and Student Counseling Service. This fee also covers student activities through the Office of the Reynolds Club and Student Activities (ORCSA) as well as class laboratory and library fees for college students.
Student Health and Counseling Services
Student Health Service
The Student Heath Service (SHS) is located in Suite R-100 of the main hospital at 5841 S. Maryland Avenue. Summer hours at the SHS will run 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Urgent care will be open on Saturdays from 8 am to 11 am on a walk-in basis through the Primary Care Group located in the DCAM, suite 3C.
To make an appointment at the SHS, call (773) 702-4156. If you need emergency medical advice after business hours, contact the 24/7 nurseline, provided to all students through United HealthCare, at 773-702-1915. The Nurseline can provide time-saving advice and assistance and help you to determine if you need immediate medical treatment.
Student Counseling Service
The Student Counseling Service (SCS) is located at 5737 S. University Avenue, and is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For an evaluation, outside referral, or assignment to a therapist, call 702-9800 to schedule an appointment. Ordinarily, students are scheduled for an intake evaluation within a few days. For study skills consultation and evaluation, call 702-9800. Emergency cases are handled immediately. There is no need to make an appointment in a crisis, though it is helpful to call first if possible.
An SCS staff member is on call every week night and throughout the weekend for emergency consultation and evaluation. The SCS Staff Member-on-call can be reached by calling the University Telepage (702-3625) and asking to speak to the SCS Staff Member-on-call.
All aspects of care through Student Counseling (including the fact that there has been a visit) are confidential, and information will not be released to anyone without the specific written consent of the student. The number of sessions is determined on an individual basis.
Health Promotion and Wellness
Health Promotion and Wellness is a department created to assist students in becoming healthy and well-rounded individuals. We serve students with a variety of health and wellness events, programs, and awareness building activities; allowing students to see and practice healthy lifestyle choices.
