Student Life Fee

All registered students are assessed a quarterly Student Life Fee which allows them access to the Student Care Center (SCC) and Student Counseling & Resource Service (SCRS). This fee also covers student activities through the Office of the Reynolds Club and Student Activities (ORCSA) as well as class laboratory and library fees for college students.

The 2009-10 Student Life Fee for graduate students is $238 per quarter for fall, winter and spring and $189 for the summer quarter.  78% of this fee goes towards health and wellness services (the SCC and SCRS).  For college students, the fee is $277 per quarter for all four quarters and 68% of it goes towards health and wellness.  Students are assessed this fee for each quarter they are enrolled on campus.  Students may also elect to pay this fee during the summer quarter when they are not enrolled but wish to access the SCC and SCRS.

The Student Life Fee will be waived only for those students who live and study over 100 miles from campus, and who will not be on campus during the quarter. These waivers are administered by area Deans of Students.

Students who are NOT assessed the Student Life Fee and cannot access the SCC or SCRS include:

Dependent spouses or same-sex domestic partners and dependent children age 14 and older, who are insured through the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP), are assessed the Dependent Life Fee and are entitled to receive services at the Student Care Center (SCC) and the Student Counseling & Resource Service (SCRS). The Dependent Life Fee will be charged to the student's bursar account, in addition to the Student Insurance Premium.

While most of the services provided at SCC and SCRS are covered by the Student Life fee, some services incur an additional charge. More information is available in this Guide to Student Health (pdf), or by consulting the websites of the SCC and the SCRS.

At the Student Care Center (SCC) the Student Life fee covers:

At the Student Counseling & Resource Service (SCRS) this fee covers:

Individual and Couples Therapy, Medication Management, Support Groups, ADHD Services, Academic Skills Assessment Program (ASAP), and Outreach Events

Summer Coverage

Students registered at the university during the summer are automatically billed the summer Student Life Fee and have access to the SCC and SCRS.

Non-registered students for summer: Please note that summer coverage at the SCC/SCRS is not automatic. Students in eligible programs (see non-eligible programs listed above) who would like SCC/SCRS coverage during the summer must specifically elect this coverage through the Student Health Enrollments website: https://studentinsurance.uchicago.edu/studentlifefee/authenticate.php before the end of the summer registration period. By selecting the summer Student Life Fee enrollment your student account will be updated to reflect the summer Student Life Fee, and you will have access to the SCC and SCRS during the summer.  Students who are in Chicago for the summer but have not paid the summer Student Life Fee will not have access to the NurseLine or the SCC or SCRS persons-on-call.  These students and recent alumni will still have access to the resources listed at http://help.uchicago.edu

Students on Medical Leave of Absence

During the academic year in which the Medical Leave of Absence is granted, students enrolled in the University of Chicago's Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) are eligible to utilize the SCC and SCRS, pending payment of the quarterly Student Life Fee. Students on medical leave of absence who do not participate in U-SHIP at the time the leave is processed do not have access to the SCC or SCRS.
